Melissia Anson's blog ::University of Texas Joins Harvard, MIT in edX Online Learning Venture – Breaking news on Harvard Magazine com
Right now there is a new scheme on trial where the California State University system, the largest in the world, is going to start offering online classes to select students. San Jose University is now starting a new program where it will offer certain classes online. The university will collaborate with the Silicon Valley company Udacity in an effort to start this whole venture. At the beginning, classes will be on offer to just 300 students with three different courses to choose from, but it's highly feasible that online classes for first year students could move to other California universities if this pilot works as well as it is expected to. Governor Jerry Brown is also on board and has been trying to get schools to offer online classes in an effort to make things less costly for those students who are unable to pay exorbitant university fees. This move would be a big help to students who come from lower income families and who might not normally be able to afford to attend a traditional college. England already has a similar scheme in place that is working nicely so far and I've been privileged to take quite a lot of online classes offered through the University of Oxford with top notch professors to guide students. Even if you're just taking classes to get more information about a subject you're interested in, having online university classes available is an excellent idea. MIT has their Open Courseware program which has some wonderful online courses to choose from and, while these don't count towards a degree, they are fantastic in every way and allow users to follow the exact curriculum that is used in each class along with plenty of video lectures of the classes as well. Dr. Katherine Cohen of IvyWise says, "Distance learning has been taken to a whole new level in recent years with the introduction of massive open online courses taught by well-respected professors from revered universities including Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, aimed at large-scale participation and open access via the web." Certainly there are some things missing when it comes to taking online classes. Social participation may be the first thing people think of when it comes to online classes but their perspective may just need to shift a bit as there is plenty of social participation, and not just online either. Many students meet up with their professor or tutor for these kinds of classes and while it has nothing in common with a dorm room scenario it is still social interaction all the same. It seems wise that in in this global world that has been changed markedly by technology that universities would offer online classes, and the California State University system looks set to jump into the foray soon as well.
