               The               Babson               Survey               Research               Group               conducted               a               survey               concerning               online               learning.

It               showed               that               the               number               of               students               enrolled               in               one               or               more               online               courses               has               reached               almost               7               million.

The               number               of               major               institutions               of               higher               learning               participating               remains               low.

Most               have               yet               to               offer               more               than               a               few               online               classes.
               According               to               the               survey,               6.7               million               students               were               involved               with               at               least               one               online               course               during               the               2011               fall               term.

This               is               an               increase               of               570,000               from               the               prior               year.

Thirty-two               percent               of               students               involved               in               a               higher               education               program               are               taking               at               least               one               online               course.

There               are               only               2.6               percent               of               institutions               of               higher               education               that               provide               Massive               Open               Online               Courses               (MOOCs).

An               additional               9.4               percent               of               survey               participants               stated               they               are               in               the               planning               stages               of               creating               MOOCs.
               This               was               the               tenth               year               the               survey               was               held.

It               is               a               cooperative               endeavor               between               the               College               Board               and               the               Babson               Survey               Research.

The               annual               survey               is               considered               a               good               measurement               of               online               learning               in               the               United               States.

The               survey               is               based               on               the               responses               of               over               2,800               academic               leaders.
               American               academic               leaders               continue               to               feel               that               MOOCs               do               not               present               a               justifiable               way               for               online               courses               to               be               offered.

They               do               feel               MOOCs               are               a               way               for               institutions               to               educate               themselves               about               online               instruction.
               Other               findings
               -               Seventy-seven               percent               of               academic               leaders               rate               the               learning               outcomes               in               online               education               as               the               same               or               superior               to               those               in               face-to-face               classes.


               -               The               proportion               of               chief               academic               officers               who               believe               their               faculty               accepts               the               value               and               legitimacy               of               online               education               has               not               increased.

It               now               stands               at               only               30.2               percent.


               -               The               proportion               of               chief               academic               leaders               who               say               online               learning               is               critical               to               their               long-term               strategy               is               at               a               new               high               of               69.1               percent.


               -               The               perception               of               a               majority               of               chief               academic               officers,               at               all               types               of               institutions,               is               lower               retention               rates               for               online               courses               remain               a               barrier               to               the               growth               of               online               instruction.

In               a               January               8,               2013               press               release,               Todd               Hitchcock,               Senior               Vice               President               of               Online               Solutions,               Pearson               Learning               Solutions               is               quoted               as               saying               "Learning               is               no               longer               limited               to               four               walls,               learning               can               happen               anywhere               and               it               already               is               happening               everywhere,               every               day.

The               growth               of               online               learning               underscores               this               need               for               quality,               flexible               education               programs               that               meet               the               demands               of               our               21st-century               workforce."
